Recently, the world famous BitTorrent tracker site was taken to court for copyright infringement. The outcome of the trial was that Thepiratebay are not and have never been breaking the law.
Peter, Piratebay's press and media manager explains how BitTorrent works. Each person who downloads the content also uploaded parts of the copyrighted material to other people who are downloading it enabling them to finish the download quicker. This is supposed to be faster and more efficiant than HTTP downloads. Why? because HTTP download speeds depend on the upload speed of the server. With BitTorrent, there are parts of the content coming in from different people at the same time upping the speed.
Thepiratebay calmly explained that they do not host any of the pirated material on their servers but they mearly link to it through .torrent files.
Here is a youtube video I found which reveals Peter's view on piracy.
Peter: Yeah I download everything from pirate bay, applications, movies, TV shows and music.
Reporter: And is that legal
Peter: I don't care, thats the big thing I don't care, I download it, if I want it, I take it because I can.
- This is because human rights allows him to.
What is quite interesting is the opposed point of view. You have the music and movie industry who's saying: This is outrageous, it's illegal and immoral. We paid money to create this and people are downloading it for free.
On the other hand it could be argued that "all they care about is our money" which suggests that they don't respect us as people, all they care about is whats in our pockets.
I quote someone else's opinion: Why can't the industries see that downloading IS a sign of respect, we don't download crap we don't like, only stuff we do like. If I download a game, Its because I like it, not because I don't like it.
On the sharing point of view:
If I bought a film from the shop, took it home and watched it, I then lent it to my friend then its sharing.
If I bought a film from the shop, took it home and watched it, I then copied it and send a copy to my friend, its piracy and illegal.
Music and DVD piracy... games??
At the beginning of some films, they put on scary adverts saying: Would you steal a car?, would you steal a handbag?, would you steal a mobile phone? Downloading is stealing.
Think of the logic of this, if I download a film thats on the internet, once the download is finished... the film is still there, nothing has been stolen. If you walk into a shop and physically take a DVD, then its gone, which is indeed steeling.
Are you going to go out and pay 70 euros for a PC game? Selling a game for that price is immoral in itself
I like one song from megadeth, I know that because I listend to it on deezer.com. I thought to myself maybe I would like more of their material. I searched their name but didn't like any other song I heard. So what do I do? Go out and buy the entire album for 1 song?
Whats happening?
Governments are starting to push internet service providers (ISP)s to track their customers and give them the 3 strikes method.
1: They warn you by e-mail
2: They cut you off for 2 days
3: They cut you off for ever for disobaying their authority as a human with more human rights than you.
This is the ISP's responce:
It is physically impossible for ISPs to know which users are using BitTorrent technology, and even if we could, it would be against our privacy policy and human rights.
-ISPs are not happy about the new law but if they choose not to abide, they will be prosecuted.
I found this video which has more info
Is this law going to be passed?
Whats going to happen?
Why piracy? Why not going after people who make and upload viruses which distroy thousands of computers a week over the globe? That is theoretically more damaging than piracy but its still top story.
More will be added soon! ;) I bet this gave you something to talk about.
